Your Clinician

A real licensed professional reviews every case.

We don't use AI to generate letters. Every single assessment is reviewed by a licensed mental health professional - a psychiatrist, psychologist, LCSW, LPC, or LMFT - who is credentialed and practicing in your state.

They evaluate whether you have a qualifying mental health condition and whether your pet provides therapeutic benefit for that condition. If additional information is needed, they'll reach out directly.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about the process.

Browse all articles
Is the assessment really free?

Yes. You complete the assessment at no cost. You only pay if a clinician approves your case and you choose to receive your letter.

What if I'm not approved?

If the clinician determines you don't qualify, you won't be charged. We'll also provide guidance on why and what options may be available to you.

How long does the whole process take?

Most people receive their letter within 2–4 hours of submitting. During peak hours it can take slightly longer, but same-day delivery is our standard.

Do I need to see the clinician on video?

Not always. In many cases, a written assessment is sufficient. If the clinician needs more information, they may request a brief video or phone call - this is included at no extra cost.

Will my landlord accept the letter?

We have a 98% landlord acceptance rate. If your letter is rejected, our support team contacts your landlord directly. If we still can't resolve it, we refund you in full.

Does the letter expire?

ESA and PSD letters are typically valid for one year. We'll remind you 30 days before expiry so you can renew without any gap in coverage.

What's the difference between an ESA and PSD letter?

An ESA letter covers housing rights under the FHA. A PSD letter covers housing, plus ADA public access rights and air travel protections under the ACAA. See our comparison guide for full details.

Is my health information kept private?

Absolutely. We are fully HIPAA-compliant. Your health information is encrypted, never sold, and never shared without your explicit consent.

Getting Your ESA Letter: What to Expect

The three-step process for getting an ESA letter online is straightforward, but understanding what happens at each stage helps you prepare and ensures the fastest possible turnaround. Here is what the process looks like in practice.

Step 1 - The assessment takes about 10–15 minutes. You answer questions about your mental health history, your current symptoms, how they affect your daily life and housing situation, and how your animal helps you. Honest, specific answers produce the best outcome. The intake form is designed by licensed clinicians, not by marketers - it's the same information your clinician needs to make a proper assessment.

Step 2 - The clinical evaluation is where your case is reviewed by a licensed mental health professional in our clinician network against the clinical and legal standards required by HUD Fair Housing Act guidelines. This is a real evaluation, not an automated approval - which is why letters from The Supportive Pet are accepted and our competitors' letters are increasingly rejected by landlords who verify credentials.

Step 3 - Your letter is delivered as a PDF to your email, typically the same day your assessment is reviewed. The letter is issued on the evaluating clinician's official letterhead, includes their full license number and NPI number (verifiable via the NPPES registry), and contains the FHA-required nexus language connecting your disability to your need for the animal.

Common Questions About the ESA Letter Process

Do I need a prior diagnosis to get an ESA letter?

You do not need an existing diagnosis from another provider. Your assigned clinician conducts an independent clinical evaluation as part of the process. If your symptoms and functional impairment meet the diagnostic criteria for a qualifying condition, the clinician can establish the diagnosis as part of your ESA evaluation. Prior diagnosis is useful context but is not required.

What if I don't qualify?

If the evaluating clinician determines that your condition does not meet the clinical standard for ESA documentation, you are not charged. The Supportive Pet operates on a no-risk model: you only pay after your letter is approved and delivered. The majority of applicants who complete the intake process in good faith are approved.

How quickly will I receive my letter?

Most letters are reviewed and delivered the same day. The assessment is open 24/7 and applications submitted during business hours are typically processed within a few hours. If you need your letter urgently, note that in the intake form and our team will prioritize your review.

Will my landlord be able to verify the letter?

Yes. Every letter includes the issuing clinician's full name, NPI number, and license information, verifiable through the NPPES registry. We also offer free landlord verification support - if your landlord wants to confirm the letter's authenticity directly, our team handles that communication. Letters issued by The Supportive Pet are designed to hold up to the verification standards that informed landlords now apply.

Is the process private and HIPAA compliant?

Yes. The Supportive Pet is fully HIPAA compliant. All information you share during the assessment is encrypted, stored securely, and handled under the same privacy standards as any licensed clinical provider. Your specific diagnosis is never disclosed to your landlord - they receive only confirmation that a qualifying disability exists and that an ESA is clinically appropriate.
